  • PDC 2005

My employer, Applied Information Sciences, is sending me to the PDC in Los Angeles this year. During the week of September 12, look for postings on some of my favorite topics such as Avalon and presentation technologies.

  • More on Wallpaper

Here's a decent short article on why you need to prime your walls, so you don't end up with the awful mess the previous homeowners left me. DEAR TIM: I was thinking of wallpapering several rooms in my house and installing a few borders in others. But after talking with some friends who have removed wallpaper from their houses I think I might not do it. As they removed the paper the...

  • Techniques for Managing Files in VS 2005 Web Projects

ScottGu's Blog contains a great article on managing your web projects. Check it out. I've seen several questions come up in the last few days regarding techniques for structuring project layouts with web projects in VS 2005. In particular, I've received several good questions asking for ways to manage large image directories as well as temporary storage directories underneath web projec...

  • 3d Ultrasound

At the 16 week appointment this past Friday, I learned that besides other neat things like the online nursery for grandparents, AAMC uses the new 3d Ultrasound imaging for the 20 week ultrasound. I'm a big fan of 3d work and use Rhino 3d, 3d Studio Max and other programs to do my own 3d design and tinkering, so this is pretty exciting stuff. I don't suppose they'll send me a STL, DXF, or poi...

  • House Appraisal

It was well worth my effort to clean up the house in preparation for the appraisal. All in all, I used just over 6 gallons of Kilz to do the house. Add to that the one gallon of yellow paint Melissa used to finish the baby room. I patched and sanded the dents and holes, primed all the walls with Kilz, primed the kitchen ceiling with Kilz, nailed up about $130 worth of cheap primed pine cla...

  • Trim Nailer and Air Compressor

I can't recommend enough the combination of the Bostitch 15 gauge magnesium trim nailer and the Ridgid oil-free compressor. I used those to nail up all the door trim in preparation for the appraisal. This guy made very quick work of nailing trim and door casings. I also purchased a Bostitch 18 gauge magnesium brad nailer, and wish I would have had that earlier. It's perfect for some of t...

  • First Drywall Job

One thing I had to do before the appraiser came was temporarily fix this one terrible looking wall downstairs. The wall used to have stained tongue-and-groove pine boards over drywall. Unfortunately, the panels were screwed in from behind the drywall - an area that the previous owner later finished by drywalling the interior wall. This meant you could only remove the panels by ripping the ...

  • Week 16

Wednesday started week 16 of the pregnancy. Melissa's definitely showing a bit, but now that the house has been cleaned back up, the emotions are oddly back under control ;-) She's back to feeling a bit ill in the evenings though. How anyone could say they enjoy pregnancy is beyond my male understanding. Another month or so and I'll have to start carrying around a club to beat away all the wei...

  • Great Info on .NET Web Projects

ScottGu's blog has some great information on the VS 2005 Web Projects There has been a lot of online discussion lately about the new web project system that is being introduced with VS 2005.  My goal with this post is to explain a little more about what it is, and provide some background as to the features it provides and the motivation we had in introducing it. There's a bit of someth...

  • Why Wallpaper is Evil

Ok, I have to get it out in the open: wallpaper is evil. People who put wallpaper in their house are just plain selfish ;-) No, I'm not talking about desktop wallpaper; I'm talking about the real stuff.Let's face it, if you put wallpaper up, in 10-15 or so years, it is going to be out of style and really nasty to look at. You may not be living in the house at that time, but unless y...

  • Week 15

Wednesday August 17 started week 15 of pregnancy. Melissa is feeling better (no more nausea), but is still very tired all day. I've also noticed a definite change in mood and emotions. Then again, that could just be because my remodeling efforts have made an enormous mess of the house, and I've been a bit of a cad about it :) http://www.pregnancyguideonline.com/wk15.htm 25 weeks to go.

  • Appraisals and Home Renovations

I started this home renovation before I considered expanding it and seeking financing. That ugly old wallpaper just had to go. Rule 1 in Home renovating: if you even think you might be looking for financing to do the renovation don't do anything yet! Now I'm scrambling to put temporary trim back on the walls, finish removing the wallpaper and patch and prime before the appraiser comes...
